Gioachino Greco
Original title: Trattato del nobilissimo gioco de scacchi
Gioachino Greco's treatise introduces a chess art in which rapid development, initiative and precise attacking calculation stand out particularly clearly. The edition follows the surviving text of an Italian manuscript of 1619–1621. Alongside practical sequences, it contains addresses, explanations of the pieces, rules and advice for players.
The chess material centres on sharp encounters, unexpected sacrifices, the opening of lines and the exploitation of opening errors. The sequence of moves shows a small concession becoming a dangerous threat and then a decisive attack. Analysis requires attention to the defending side's replies and to the historical conditions under which the author considers the position.
The book provides material for independent study: pause before the decisive move, find the idea and compare your continuation with Greco's record. It is also a witness to the transmission of chess knowledge through manuscripts, where a practical example serves as proof. Coordinate notation, diagrams and notes help today's reader follow the author's account.
